Preface
This document is not an original genealogical compilation. Rather, it is an update to the document complied by Elsie Foster and published about 1963 titled “Our Brokaw-Bragaw Heritage.” In preparing this update a number of issues arose. First, I wanted to maintain the integrity of the original work so that those that may follow will be able to distinguish the old from the new and easily recognize any changes and additions that were made. Second, some of the information originally presented was in error and needed correcting or was new and needed to be added. And third, this update only applies to that portion of the original work that contains the surname “Bragaw.” Therefore, the original reference numbering system did not allow for insertion of new numbers. Also, the limitation of the scope of this update meant that a large number of the original reference numbers were imbedded in that excluded portion. As a consequence, some new conventions were needed.
Individual records
I have made no serious effort to correct punctuation or grammar. To do so would have been counter productive to my original purpose of updating the information. So, in order to make the distinction between the new and the old information, anything new is in italics. I must admit that occasionally the temptation was too great and an unannotated correction was made. Mostly it was in the tense, changing it from present to past for those no longer alive. Occasionally, it was an indefinite pronoun that was corrected.
Reference Numbers
When an individual has additional information presented in the next generation, the original author placed an X preceding the individual’s reference number. In the original documents a number of generations were frequently compressed into a single record. thereby saving space. As a consequence, those individuals did not have a reference number. In order to better examine what information was needed to complete an individual’s record it was necessary to decompress those records, thus adding a requirement for additional reference numbers. Likewise, in the later generations where new entries are needed, the generation numbers used by the original author are no longer compatible. So, new numbers were arbitrarily started with 5000. In the case of an old reference number for an individual who was not originally discussed in the next generation (had no X) or a new reference number assigned to an individual who is further discussed in the next generation, an “A” precedes that reference number. The letter “X” is used exclusively as assigned in the original document.
New Material and Corrections.
Beginning at the third generation the information appearing in the tree structures of this study are limited to the surname Bragaw and their descendants. Frequently, a significant amount of information is provided for the families of the daughters in the Bragaw family. That information has been preserved and new information is provided.
New Findings
In the course of this update I have occasionally encountered the surname Bragaw associated with a family that appears to have its origins in Ireland. I have kept those records separately for later investigation and have not included them in this update.
I have found a new branch of the family not previously documented. Primarily they are currently located in Missouri and are descendants of Adrian Bragaw (ref. 5014-5), son of Samuel I. Bragaw (ref. 234-1). The rationale for their inclusion is provided in this report.
Status
This report is a draft of an incomplete update. The contents presented on-line are subject to changes until the final report is prepared and published.
